One year after zoning reform, housing surges but sprawl continues By The way and the speed at which Edmonton develops is starting to change, thanks in part to the updated zoning bylaw, according to city administration. Travis Pawlyk, branch manager of development services, told Taproot on May 23 that the city approved 16,511 new dwelling units in 2024, a 30% increase compared to 2023. The number of development permits the city issued also increased by 41% in 2024.

Council to vote on upzoning more than 1,200 properties By City council is set to vote on May 20 on whether to proactively upzone more than 1,200 lots in Garneau, Wîhkwêntôwin, and the Stony Plain Road area to allow commercial uses and greater density. The lots are located in what the city calls priority growth areas. These areas are expected to experience the most development in the short-term.
