    Outdoor Recreation is presenting a free fishing day at the Carroll D. Hudson Recreation Area on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. A Coast Guard boater safety course is scheduled for later this month. Each year, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources designates a free fishing day for the public to fish recreationally in public waters without a fishing license. The event is part of National Fishing and Boating Week, which runs June 1-8.

    Maj. Gen. Kevin Meisler, the Army Materiel Command chief of staff, said a proclamation designating June 1-14 as the region’s Armed Forces Celebration symbolizes the community’s “unwavering support” to the military. Meisler spoke Monday at the Huntsville Madison County Veterans Memorial where he received the proclamation signed by Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle, Madison Mayor Paul Finley and Madison County Commission Chairman Mac McCutcheon.
