1st Sgt. Michael Mills, of Headquarters & Headquarters Company, Aviation and Missile Command, received a bachelor’s degree in homeland security at last year’s Redstone graduation event. On Thursday, he was the commencement speaker at the Combined College Recognition Ceremony, encouraging graduates to use their education “to elevate your life for the better.”“You all have embarked on a journey to seek higher learning, and you’ve completed that journey,” he said.
Road leads toward new transportation master plan

Space Force stars in big-screen documentary

Space Force, on Friday, debuted a 12-minute documentary, created specifically to be shown on large planetarium screens like the U.S. Space & Rocket Center’s INTUITIVE Planetarium. Its goal is to raise awareness and educate the general public about the five-year-old branch of the military, according to Gen. B. Chance Saltzman, chief of space operations and senior uniformed Space Force officer.
Defending softball champion cruises on opening day

Teledyne Brown’s perennial champion team started strong on the opening day of Marshall softball season. Winning pitcher Austen Young drove in four runs as the TBE Integrators beat the Redstone Test Center team 15-6 on April 28 at NASA field 1. He throws right-handed but bats left. Young recorded one strikeout and allowed 10 hits in the four innings. Batting leadoff he went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored. “It’s good to get back out here,” Young said.
Governor gives update on moving Alabama forward

Gov. Kay Ivey said here Monday that before President Trump delivered the University of Alabama commencement address last Thursday, she put in a plug for moving U.S. Space Command to Huntsville. “Before the speech, I had a little time with the president and I assured him Huntsville, Alabama, is the rightful home for the U.S. Space Command headquarters,” Ivey said to applause at the annual Alabama Update.

The Goss Road outdoor pool opens on May 24 and season pool passes are now on sale at the Aquatics Center. The pool will be open six days a week, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Ed Nunn, director of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, said at last week’s Redstone Community Update. The pool is closed on Wednesdays and will be open for the 2025 season through Labor Day, Sept. 1.
Aviation flight test directorate receives new leadership

Lt. Col. Dan Brown assumed command of the Aviation Flight Test Directorate at the Redstone Test Center in a ceremony Friday at the Aviation Test and Instrumentation Facility. He replaced Lt. Col. Andrew Rieck, who retired after 21 years of service. The change of command ceremony was presided over by RTC Commander Col. Joe Alexander. Brown, a native of South Glastonbury, Connecticut, most recently served as RTC’s chief of staff.
Summer reading program open to all ages

The Redstone MWR Library kicks off its nearly 10-weeklong summer reading program starting May 20. This year’s game-type theme is “Level Up at Your Library.”“It’s for all ages,” library manager Nate Godwin said. “Last year, we had 421 people of all ages sign up.” The program lasts through July 25. Prizes can be earned at signup, by making weekly visits to the library and by finishing as a top reader. Participants sign up at redstone.beanstack.org and track their progress online, according to Godwin.
Bomb Busters have winning start with new ingredients

Bomb Busters softball team captain Michael Melton was like a chef trying out a new recipe. He didn’t know what he would get when he mixed his players with players from a coed Bomb Busters team. The recipe turned out delicious in their opener April 29. Melton was the winning pitcher as the Bomb Busters beat the Hammers 11-8 in six innings on NASA field 1. Most of the Bomb Busters’ players are from the FBI with a few others from the Army or NASA.
