WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Thursday marked the fourth day in a row that the District issued an “extreme heat alert,” with feel-like temperatures at or above 105 degrees. “Here it’s a little bit, I feel the humidity a little more, little sticky,” said Florence Harris Evans, who was visiting D.C. with her family Thursday. Evans is from South Carolina, where she said it’s equally hot this week. She found some refuge on a shady park bench at the National Mall.

Thursday, the group walked across the 11th Street Bridge, which connects Navy Yard to Anacostia. It’s the same path many walked on towards freedom more than a decade ago, crossing the bridge’s predecessor, the Eastern Branch-Navy Yard Bridge. “We are gathering here to celebrate Freedom’s Crossing,” said Melani N.
