Fabien Dépis couldn’t afford admission to the BIO International Convention this year at the jam-packed Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. He needed the money — hundreds of dollars — to pay the rent on his lab space in Allston. Instead, Dépis, an immunologist and CEO of startup TregShield Bio, spent the week running back and forth to the Seaport to attend networking events surrounding the biopharmaceutical industry’s annual conference.

Afternoons that would bespent playing with siblings become long drives to the doctor and hours of treatment. Kids can no longer just be kids. The parents writing to Globe Santa want to give their children a normal, joy-filled holiday, where toys and games replace thoughts of scary diagnoses, if only for a brief time.

They're from family members left with the massive financial and emotional responsibility of taking in nieces, nephews and grandchildren when their loved ones are overcome by addiction. One 24-year-old woman was barely out of childhood herself when she began caring for her nieces and nephew, ages 17, 11 and 7.
