From a young age, I watched my grandmother in the kitchen, and I had the basic notions of how to prepare food: how to boil water, what to do if you burned yourself, and how to clean dishes after your meal.

As a poor, depressed, terrified gay kid in a small town, it was there that I found a copy of David Levithan’s “Boy Meets Boy” after its title caught my eye with its implied queerness. My family was too poor to buy books, and there’s no chance anyone in my life would have bought me a book with such a suggestive title; in my small-town Catholic community, being gay was a sin other people committed.

Maria Bamford doesn’t worry about being noticed at the dog park. “It’s Los Angeles,” she tells me over the phone when I ask if anyone recognizes her from her decades-long comedy career. “Nobody gives a shit if they did.” When she offers to text me a photo of her dogs patronizing said park, I decline for the sake of maintaining a professional facade. I’m a fan of Bamford’s, from her semi-autobiographical Netflix series Lady Dynamite to her Portlandia-esque Target commercials.
