Later this week, the Wyoming State Legislature’s Joint Select Committee on Tribal Relations will hold its first interim meeting in Fort Washakie. Items on its agenda range from juvenile justice to 911 outages to solid waste issues. Some notable bills came out of the committee last year, including one that updates Wyoming’s rock art protections. This year, the committee is helmed by two Fremont County legislators: Senator Cale Case and Representative Ivan Posey.

Last week, a post circulated on Facebook: Someone had reported seeing a grizzly bear on Brewer’s Trail above Bruce’s parking lot in Sinks Canyon. People traded bear safety tips and warned each other to be careful; although bears are nothing new for the mountains above Lander, they aren’t routinely spotted in Sinks Canyon. Grizzlies are also much rarer, and typically more aggressive, than black bears. They say bad news travels fast, and bear encounters are a good example of that.

Owls have a reputation for being wise – maybe that’s why they make for such good educational partners. Next Saturday, the Riverton Museum has invited a special guest down from Cody: Teasdale the great horned owl, a resident of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West’s Draper Museum Raptor Experience. “It seemed like a really fun thing to be able to share with the public,” Riverton Museum Program Coordinator Anne Gebo remarked.

Last year, the Lander City Council voted for a steady 7% increase on water rates in the coming years to pay for its slate of infrastructure projects. But since that vote was held, the cost of the projects has nearly doubled, and Tuesday the city held its first public hearing for a new rate increase: 9% for both sewer and water. “When we went to SLIB with our original projects, they were at $45 million; when they came back to us they were at $89 million.
