DiscussionThis qualitative study provides an in-depth exploration of children and their families’ experience of living with CBS. Overall, participants described mostly negative experiences, where hallucinations had caused considerable upset with long-standing residual effects. Perspectives on the quality of healthcare and support that had been received were largely considered suboptimal.

1. IntroductionThe retina is a highly metabolically active tissue with the photoreceptors being one of the most energy consuming cell types of the body; a single mouse rod photoreceptor consumes approximately 108 molecules of ATP per second in the dark [1]. The main energy source for photoreceptors is glucose, which is transported from the choriocapillaris to the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and then to the photoreceptors via glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1) [2].

1. IntroductionVisual impairment represents a significant public health challenge. The number of people living with visual impairment globally is projected to increase to 1.8 billion by the year 2050 [1]. Compared to other chronic health conditions, the negative impact of visual impairment on the patient is extensive [2], affecting a range of aspects of daily living, including mobility, routine activities, employment, social interactions, and mental health [3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10].
