Since getting into running, I’ve developed something of a love affair with trainers. I love everything about them - the look, the foams, the drops, the ridiculous names, the colourways. I follow what each brand is doing, get excited about updates to models I’ve never even worn, and could happily fall into a YouTube rabbit hole of shoe reviews if left unattended for more than five minutes. Unfortunately, my enthusiasm doesn’t always align with what actually works for me.

The shift is part of a new partnership with ticketing provider SeatGeek and means fans will be required to store their match and season tickets on their smartphones via Apple or Google Wallets. The charity will provide financial and practical support to those already doing critical work in animal care, rehoming, and rehabilitation. On paper, it ticked the right boxes. Thirty miles, plenty of time on feet, and perhaps most importantly, the fuelling felt spot on. Energy levels were solid throughout, and I even developed a newfound appreciation for salty potatoes - a Comrades staple I’d never quite got before. Though not quite as enthusiastic as my running mate Adam Baker, who looked like he’d found culinary gold every time he took a bite. The run did what it was supposed to do. But that doesn’t mean it was easy.

Mark Armstrong is just over four weeks away from Comrades (Image: Dreampace) It’s all starting to feel uncomfortably close now. Four weeks from Sunday, I’ll be standing on the start line in Pietermaritzburg, about to take on the Comrades Marathon. Just saying that makes my stomach flip. It’s a scary thought - but perhaps not quite as scary as it was 10 days ago.
