Sometimes, the best thing you can do for your running is… not run too much. That’s been my approach this past week, as my hamstring has finally settled and I’ve leaned into easy running, recovery, and trying not to panic about Comrades being just over seven weeks away. I’ve stripped things right back - shorter runs, gentle paces, and simply maintaining the habit.

I stood on the start line at the Trowse 10K not quite sure what I was doing there. I’d had man flu earlier in the week, barely done any speed sessions in what felt like months, and I was still floating somewhere between post-marathon recovery and I-really-need-to-start-Comrades-training. But still, I couldn’t resist the pull of a local race. Trowse is never an easy 10K. The course is scenic, sure, but it’s best known for that hill, which you have to climb twice.

Mark Armstrong is planning on running Comrades in June (Image: RunThrough) “We don’t talk about Comrades…”  That became the running joke between me and a few close friends earlier this year.   I had told a few mates that I had something big planned after the Barcelona Marathon – something that made even 26.2 miles seem pretty manageable – but I didn’t want to dwell on it. The focus was Barcelona. A marathon PB. All my energy had to go into that. MORE: Love running?

2 1/1 ‘Don't let this slip...’   It was kilometre 39 at the Barcelona Marathon. All those miles banked in the depths of winter. All those strength sessions undertaken to keep me on the road. All that mobility and foam rolling when I’d rather just watch the football. It had come down to 3K… just under two miles.   My tired mind worked out that I had about 14 minutes of running left.

The hay is in the barn, as they say... By the time a lot of you read this, hopefully, I will have touched down in Barcelona, ready to start my carb load, which I like to begin around 36 hours before the race. It’s felt like a long week. I don’t want to wish my life away, but it feels like I’ve been waiting all week for that 4am alarm on Friday morning to start the journey to Stansted Airport (I know… I’m planning on an afternoon siesta…).
