ATLANTA - The bigger-but-not-necessarily-better College Football Playoff is at hand, and already that essential component of college football - angst - has taken hold. Friday's game will be staged in South Bend, Ind. Snow is in the forecast. Never has snow fallen on a CFP game, though rain fell so hard on our fair city that the roof at Mercedes-Benz Stadium leaked the first time Georgia met Alabama for the title. Georgia and Alabama would meet a second time for the title.

ATLANTA - The Falcons needed a quarterback so badly they flouted NFL regulations to get one. They paid him $180 million. (Though only - only! - $100M is guaranteed.) He started 14 games. He might not start another, at least not for this club. I was here when Dan Henning benched Steve Bartkowski, franchise QB, for David Archer, drafted by no NFL club. I was in Flowery Branch the day the Falcons opened camp while Michael Vick, franchise QB, appeared in federal court. I've been around. I've seen things.

Congratulations to @tori_mcelhaney and @wileyballard_ As for me, I'm shocked. Going 34 years between #NSMA awards has to be a record. Thanks to one and all for all the kind words.
