Energy bills are set to rise by 6.4 per cent for millions of households from April 1 after Ofgem announced it will raise its price cap for the third consecutive quarter. The regulator pointed to a substantial jump in wholesale prices as the reason behind the increase, which will push the average bill for customers in England, Scotland and Wales on a standard variable tariff up from the present annual cost of £1,738 to £1,849.
