A wise man once observed that "we're all stories in the end", and this week's Doctor Who is a celebration of just how powerful those stories can be. It's also an episode that feels more magical and mythical than anything we've seen so far in Russell T Davies' pantheon of the gods era. But more importantly, it's a Doctor Who story that feels fresh and original, something that's been lacking in a series that has largely seemed content to play some of RTD's greatest hits.

In Aliens, James Cameron swaps the claustrophobic tension of Ridley Scott's original for a full-scale war movie set on a colony world. Steven Moffat's Blink sequel, The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone, did something similar by pairing our hero with a group of space marines to battle an army of Weeping Angels. Both of these sequels lost their way in the upscale, losing the tension and atmosphere of the originals in pursuit of bigger thrills.

During his first era as Doctor Who showrunner, Russell T Davies established a template that would form a rigid backbone for each season. Opener on contemporary Earth, trip to space, meeting with famous historical figure, return of classic era monster, rinse, repeat. For his second era, he appeared to throw all of that away, delivering experimental, format-defying episodes like 73 Yards and Dot and Bubble.
