Russia’s war against Ukraine is a textbook example of the crime of aggression, a flagrant violation of international law. No state may use force against another, regardless of its aims, unless it is acting in self-defence or under the authority of the UN Security Council. This aggression laid the groundwork for all of the other crimes being committed daily by Russian forces. The crime will be permanently normalised if the international community fails to prosecute it now.
