It's been 33 years since the Westray Mine disaster rocked Nova Scotia's Pictou County, and both unions and politicians say it's a time to remember the fight continues to ensure workers are protected. At 5:18 a.m. on May 9, 1992, an explosion of methane gas and coal dust sent a fireball through the mine, killing all 26 workers inside.

By Mark Hodgins The price for gasoline did not change this week, as the provincial regulator announced its regular weekly adjustment. The Nova Scotia Energy Board says the minimum price for regular, self-serve gasoline would remain at 139.4.It's a different story for diesel, which saw prices drop by 5.9 cents to a new minimum of 133.2.This time last year, gas prices in the Halifax area were 179.4, and diesel prices were 175.4.

It could be a more challenging commute on Thursday morning for people who use the Bedford Highway. Halifax Regional Police says as of 6 a.m., the roadway is closed in both directions between Kearney Lake Road and Flamingo Drive after an early-morning crash that took out a power pole and brought down wires. That has also led to a large power outage in the surrounding area, impacting more than 6,000 Nova Scotia Power customers.

Public Health says there will be a free measles vaccine clinic on Thursday after the province's top doctor announced a case in the Halifax area. Tuesday afternoon, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Robert Strang announced a case of measles, involving an adult who travelled outside of Canada. Strang said the person turned up to the QEII emergency department on Sunday night. The person has one dose of vaccine, according to Strang, but people generally need two doses to be fully vaccinated.

By Mark Hodgins A test of the national Alert Ready system will be happening later today. Alert Ready says there will be tests in all provinces and territories except for Quebec on Wednesday. In Nova Scotia, it will happen at 1:55 p.m.You can expect to see test alerts show up on TV, radio and devices like smartphones, along with that distinctive alert tone. The test comes during Emergency Preparedness Week in Canada.
