ST. PAUL - Senior forward Joey Gillespie scored twice, including a shorthanded goal in the third period, to lead No. 2 seed St. Cloud Cathedral to a 3-0 victory over No. 7 seed Mahtomedi on Wednesday in a state Class 1A quarterfinal at the Xcel Energy Center. Gillespie’s third-period goal put the defending state champion Zephyrs (19-8-2) ahead 3-0 and came off a feed from linemate John Hirschfeld, who alertly grabbed the rebound of his initial shot and fed a wide-open Gillespie in front.

Volkman, on a rush with Trey Fredenberg into the Hill-Murray defensive zone, elected to shoot and whistled a high shot over the shoulder of Pioneers goaltender Grayson Hanggi to end it.

Hope was perhaps Lakeville North’s biggest weapon on Thursday night in the Section 1AA boys hockey championship game at the Rochester Rec Center. Lakeville South senior forward Brayden Olsen did his best to eliminate that weapon early on, scoring a goal in each of the first two periods as the No. 1-seeded Cougars snuffed out that Panthers’ hope and took home their sixth section championship in seven years with a 5-1 victory.
