Summer is a great time for a road trip and Burt County Economic Development Corp. is working to bring visitors here during the summer and all year. BCED Executive Director Cindy Chatt told the Burt County Board of Supervisors June 11 that a lot is going on in the county to draw visitors. For example, the board approved four requests for lodging tax grants.

How would residents know an emergency situation is eminent and where would people who don’t have shelter go in such an emergency? The City of Tekamah has learned a few answers the hard way. Recent testing showed an emergency siren did not work, the March blizzard showed the city was not prepared to host displaced people during an emergency even though the city auditorium is designated as an emergency shelter. Tekamah City Council addresses both situations during its May 22 meeting.

With budget considerations soon on the table, the Burt County Sheriff’s Office gave the county Board of Supervisors a little to think about ahead of time. County Sheriff Eric Nick approached the board during its May 28 meeting to ask for another deputy. One more, he said, would give the department six deputies, plus chief deputy Jim Buck and himself. It also would allow having two deputies on patrol at any time. But adding another deputy will be an expensive proposition.

More projects than money. That’s where Burt County Economic Development Corp. finds itself as the fiscal year winds down. During its May 14 meeting, Burt County Board of Supervisors heard a report that BCED’s commercial renovation grant program has $31,550 in its fund and over $42,000 in approved projects that have yet to paid out from the grant-funded account. As such, the board took no action on three more projects approved by BCED’s board that would have added another $29,323.49 to the tab.
