WEST HAVEN - The Wilcox Tech baseball team defended its Connecticut Technical Conference championship Friday night with a decisive victory at West Haven High's Whitey Piurek Field. The Wildcats defeated Kaynor Tech of Waterbury, 12-2, in a five-inning mercy-rule game. Wilcox Tech (17-6) scored 10 runs in the bottom of the third inning to back winning right-handed pitcher Bobby Herzman. Herzman, headed to the University of New Haven, allowed only two hits and three walks while striking out seven.

WOLCOTT - The top-seeded Woodland High softball team defeated Wolcott, 10-0, on Wednesday night to advance to the NVL championship game. The Hawks will face No. 2 St. Paul on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Seymour High for the league title. The Falcons defeated No. 3 Seymour, 6-1, in the first semifinal. For the unbeaten Hawks (22-0), Ella Van Alstyne tossed a three-hitter with one walk and 17 strikeouts, and had three hits and two runs scored as the leadoff hitter.

WOLCOTT - Holy Cross High seniors Elijah Nieves and Anthony Carisio know each other's tennis game rather well. They're best friends, on and off the court. Nieves found a way to top Carisio in the boys singles final of the Naugatuck Valley League Tournament with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at Wolcott High School. Article continues below this ad Last year, it was Carisio who topped Nieves in a close NVL final, winning in a tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets.

WOODBURY - Senior Juliet Eddy of Shepaug captured the Berkshire League girls singles tennis title for the second consecutive year Tuesday at Nonnewaug High School. Eddy defeated Madison Evers of Thomaston in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, in the tournament final.
