MediaRoom column: After a dismal few years MediaWorks looks like it is getting some of its mojo back. The company’s audience share in the 25 to 54 age group, known in the industry as the money zone, is at its highest since 2020 and, at 58 percent, is well ahead of its rival NZME on 31percent. Strong performances from brands like Mai FM, The Breeze, More FM and The Rock have driven increased revenues as well as ratings.

Comment: When he was at TV3 Ryan Bridge had many of the hallmarks of a young Paul Henry. He was a good interviewer, agile thinker, flaunted his own brand of humour, and held the same disdain for political correctness that Henry is known for. Bridge was in line for his own 7pm show until TV3’s owners, Warner Bros. Discovery, pulled the pin on the network’s own news operation, Newshub.

When Summerset staged its first open day at its new retirement village in the Auckland suburb of St Johns more than 2000 people surged through the doors. They weren’t all retirees looking to buy an apartment in the upmarket village; among the crowd were curious locals who have watched the village take shape on the suburb’s prime piece of real estate.

Homeowners with mortgages coming up for renewal are starting to smile. Hardly a day goes by now without one of the banks tweaking its mortgage offering in favour of home buyers. Whether to fix short term (e.g. six months), sit on a floating rate until the bottom is reached or take the certainty of longer term if you think inflationary times are not quite over has become a swirling debate in the property world.

Comment: Having been badly mauled by the E tū union and the Employment Court for not carrying out proper staff consultation over earlier cutbacks TVNZ’s management is staying silent about its latest cost reduction strategy. The bungled axing of Sunday and Fair Go means no one outside TVNZ is privy to the thinking behind a new proposal to save or find $30 million dollars and, presumably, stop losing money.
