by Mark Jurgena Collinsville traveled again last weekend to the Coach Crafton Athletic Center in Elsah on the campus of Principia College for two different meets. Kahok Devin Habermehl won the shot put at both competitions. At the Tiger Indoor meet hosted by Edwardsville on March 14, Habermehl outdistanced the field with a toss of 16.98 meters or 55’ 8 ½”. Gavin Stukenberg of Edwardsville was second with a heave of 15.45 meters or 50’ 8 ¼”.

by Mark Jurgena The Collinsville girls track & field team had their second meet of the indoor season on March 15 at the Coach Crafton Athletic Center on the camps of Principia College in Elsah. Kwanza Henderson was the only first place winner of the day for the Kahoks. She won the 400 meters with a time of 1:02.05 to beat second place finisher Sophie Bowers of Vandalia who finished the race in 1:04.57. Kahok Darianna Morris was eighth at 1:08.11. She also tied for fourth place in the 60 meters.
IHSA wraps up winter sports seasons with boys basketball championships

by Mark Jurgena Illinois wrapped up its prep athletics competitions over the weekend in Urbana-Champaign on the campus of the University of Illinois. The State Farm Center served as the venue host for all four classes of boys basketball. Class 4A Benet Academy beat Warren 55-54 while Evanston beat Richton Park (Rich Township) 53-50 for third place. The semifinals saw the only two ranked teams left square off. Number eight Benet beat number nine Evanston 56-47 while Gurnee (Warren) beat Rich Twp.
SIUE to face Houston in NCAA Tourney

by Mark Jurgena It’s been a whirlwind week of interviews and appearances for the Metro East’s Division I men’s basketball team the SIUE Cougars. On March 8, SIUE beat Southeast Missouri State 69-48 at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind. to win the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament and qualify for the 68-team NCAA Tournament. It was the first time SIUE had EVER won any type of men’s basketball conference championship in the school’s history.
Racing at Highland begins on Saturday

On Tuesday night there is an open practice session for cars and fans at the race track and on Saturday night there will be racing on the track. “We’re excited to kick off the 2025 racing season at Highland Speedway with Opening Night this Saturday, March 15 with the Tut Liquor and Gas Lucky 30,” said Highland Speedway spokesman Kurt VonderHaar.

The Kahoks, under the guidance of new coach Chad Burgess, have already participated in two meets this season. Carbondale meet Last weekend, the Kahoks went to Carbondale to take part in the SIUC High School Indoor meet on the SIU campus at the Student Recreation Center. Kahok Ayden Gratzl had a big meet taking second in the pole vault but broke his old school record in the process.

Collinsville traveled to Marion for the Joe Elliott Early Indoor Girls meet at the HEC Building at Marion High School. In the 200 meters, Kwanzaa Henderson of CHS finished in second with a time of 27.23 seconds and finished behind Sophia Schardan of Triad who ran a 26.78.

by Mark Jurgena The IHSA crowned four champions in the sport of girls basketball at CEFCU Arena in Normal on the campus of Illinois State University last weekend. One season ago in Class 2A Nashville lost the state championship on a last-second shot by Peoria (Notre Dame). Saturday afternoon the Hornettes took that sting away by blasting the Irish 55-29 to win the state title. Another Southern Illinois power Mt. Carmel beat Chicago (Phillips) 50-38 for third.

by Mark Jurgena Last weekend the boys dual team wrestling championships and the girls wrestling championships were decided at Grossinger Motors Arena in Bloomington. In the dual team state matches Class 1A saw Coal City beat Vandalia 32-27 for their second state championship while Woodstock (Marian Catholic) beat Tolono (Unity) for third place. Class 2A was won by Elmhurst (Immaculate Conception) by a 46-17 decision over Washington with Lombard (Montini) beating Mahomet-Seymour for third place.

After three heartbreaking top-three finishes in her first three seasons, the Kahok senior went after that elusive state title in grand fashion. She pinned Maggie Zuber of Chicago (Mother McAuley) in 45 seconds to claim her spot in history. “It feels amazing to finally achieve a goal I’ve had since I started wrestling in seventh grade,” said Dawson. “After coming so close every year, finally winning it all means so much.
