The University of Hawaiʻi has unveiled a dashboard that provides detailed weather reports across the state, offering the public real-time data of the local weather, including specific data for Hawaiʻi's microclimates. The dashboard, developed by scientists at UH Mānoa, is part of the statewide Hawaiʻi Mesonet project. The National Science Foundation awarded UH about $1.3 million in 2021 for the project to better understand and forecast weather in Hawaiʻi.

The last patient of the New Year’s Eve fireworks explosion in Āliamanu being treated at the Straub Benioff Medical Center in Honolulu has been discharged from its burn care unit. Charmaine Benigno, described as a mother in her 20s, had burns over 80% of her body, according to a news release from Hawaiʻi Pacific Health. HPH said she had the most complex and severe burns of those who were injured.

After a change in recruitment tactics, the Honolulu Police Department says more people are applying to become officers. Last year, it got more than 2,000 applications — a 20% increase from 2023. HPD found that recent high-quality recruits were already affiliated with police or the military, or did athletics in school, so it focused on those groups. It also expanded its search, in part by reaching out to college students studying psychology, social work and even public health.

State lawmakers passed over 200 bills on Wednesday. That’s a lot to keep track of, so with the legislative session ending on Friday, HPR is narrowing it down to the important bills we’ve been tracking. All measures passed by lawmakers will next go to Gov. Josh Green for his signature. If he decides to veto a bill, lawmakers can override it with a two-thirds majority vote in both chambers.

An empty homes tax could net the City and County of Honolulu nearly $300 million in revenue over the first decade. Months ago, the council asked consulting firm Ernst and Young if an empty homes tax on O'ahu could generate revenue for the city and bring more units into the local housing supply. Mohammed Bhamani led the study and presented its findings to the council Tuesday.
