They say sometimes the best deals are the ones you don’t make, and that may be what ultimately plays out with Stefon Diggs after his visit to New England this week. Diggs was reportedly in town visiting with the Patriots earlier this week, with things clearly getting serious enough where the former Bills wideout had dinner with the team and followed that up with a physical, both typically moves showing a signing is potentially not far behind.

I said in my Free Agency preview, get ready to be disappointed. However, despite the cream of the crop being removed before the start, the Patriots did pretty well on Day One. KC tagged Trey Smith, Tee Higgins was tagged in Cincy, Alric Jackson re-signed with the Rams and Ronnie Stanley re-upped in Baltimore, all before Free Agency kicked off. Linebackers Jamien Sherwood and Zack Baun re-signed with the Jets and Eagles respectively the night before Free Agency started.

In order to move forward, we need to look back on the 2024 team and identify the weaknesses. There are many needs and there is probably not a position that doesn’t require upgrading. Let’s start with the Defense. The Defense under Demarcus Covington took a huge step backwards in 2024. Their Defense Value adjusted Over Average (DVOA) in 2023 was 9th, 3rd against the run and 15th against the pass. In 2024 it dropped to 29th.
