The Hickory Crawdads split a doubleheader with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans Sunday evening and saw its first-half division title hopes nearly evaporate. Hickory took game one 12-2, but the Pelicans earned a win in game two, 4-1. The Pelicans (24-37) won the series 4-2 and spoiled the Crawdads' (31-31) chances to earn a playoff spot with a Carolina League South Division title. With the split, Hickory remains in fifth place, 2.5 games behind Columbia with three games to play.

A local development firm has added four stories and 50 feet to its previously approved plans for a high-rise tower in downtown St. Petersburg. Clearwater-based Valor Capital has also eliminated the now-$70 million project’s most controversial aspects. The Roche Bobois Residences will no longer offer short-term rentals and a rooftop “Sky Bar.”According to revised site plans submitted to the city Monday afternoon, the 29-story tower will feature 165 luxury condominiums rather than 152.

Martin leads the Carolina League with 19 doubles. Martin also scored eight runs and had 14 RBIs on the week.

With the Hickory Crawdads in a four-team scramble for the first-half South Division title in the Carolina league, it seemed the team might catch a break by playing the team with the worst record in the league this week. The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, though, haven’t played along with the script. Myrtle Beach scored the winning run in the ninth on a balk and edged the Crawdads 3-2 Thursday night at Pelicans Ballpark. It was the second straight win for the Pelicans (22-36) against Hickory.

Of the 5 teams in the Carolina League South Division hunt, only the Kannapolis at Columbia doubleheader occured. COL swept both games and now lead the pack. Crawdads elimination number is now 3. A win tomorrow by Columbia and a doubleheader loss by Hickory finishes the 'Dads https://t.co/RXmE1Pji9n
