N.C. Sen. Chris Measmer (R-Cabarrus) was sworn in Tuesday, April 15, to represent District 34 in the North Carolina Senate, which covers the majority of Cabarrus County. He fills the vacancy created by Sen. Paul Newton (R-Cabarrus), who resigned in March. Meanwhile, his seat on the Cabarrus County Commissioners remains in legal limbo. President Pro Tempore Sen. Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) administered the oath of office for Measmer.

A group of Cabarrus citizens filed suit against Cabarrus County and Cabarrus County Commissioners in an attempt to prevent Lamarie Austin-Stripling from replacing Commissioner Chris Measmer, who was appointed to the N.C. Senate. A temporary restraining order was issued following a hearing Tuesday, April 15, preventing Austin-Stripling from taking office before the issue can be heard.
