In her recent examination of the Arugam Bay controversy (Daily FT, 6 Nov. 2024), however, that compass wobbles to the point of fracture. Some preliminaries. Her account of the often gruesome atrocities meted out by the Israeli IDF to civilians in Gaza, and now Lebanon, is both accurate and sobering.

There is a small but statistically significant difference in TOC performance data supplied by ambulance compared to TOC measured using data from the ED information system data. Patients requiring an acute care bed suffered substantial ambulance offload delays, compared to those requiring either the resuscitation or ambulatory areas, and were likely to be older and requiring admission to hospital.

Self-harm is when someone hurts themselves on purpose, regardless of the reasons for doing this. Often, shame and stigma stop people from seeking help. Self-harming behaviour increases the risk of death by suicide, and it is a common cause of disability in young people. Currently, people attending health services only represent the tip of the iceberg; the proportion of teenagers self-harming has increased over the past 20 years—this is particularly so for young women and girls.
