    PITTSFIELD — Joann Fabrics on Dalton Avenue will end over three decades in business in the city next week. According to store manager Gene Hyatt, its final day will be Thursday. On Sunday, inventory for the crafts retailer was already low. "The stuff that we sell a lot of is pretty much gone," Hyatt said. "There's not a lot left."Last Thursday, the Pittsfield location appeared on a list of over 440 remaining Joann locations slated for closure by this Saturday.

    NORTH ADAMS — Over the span of two days, North Adams Police arrested three people in two separate drug investigations. On May 15, the North Adams Police Detective Unit arrested Donald Drawec of Savoy following surveillance of a vehicle he was in. In coordination with the Northwestern Anti-Crime Task Force and Berkshire County Anti-Crime Task Force, police followed his vehicle outside Berkshire County.

    PITTSFIELD — A portion of Valentine Road will be closed to thru traffic due to underground utility work. The work, which includes the replacement of a water line, is expected to be completed by early fall, the city says. The road will be closed from West Street to Lakeway Drive. Drivers will be detoured to Onota Street, then to Lakeway Drive, before reaching the northern half of Valentine Road.

    The Beacon first debuted at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in 1933. It was a short-lived student newspaper, but it eventually returned in 1979. In the interim, various student newspapers existed on campus, including The Seed — the current Beacon’s immediate predecessor. Inspired by the tower atop Mount Greylock, the paper’s student editors picked the name to distance the publication from the tumult of the 1970s and to symbolically usher in a new era of peace for the 1980s.

    NORTH ADAMS — Two Springfield men face drug and gun charges after a North Adams traffic stop and subsequent search of two hotel rooms at the Berkshire Inn. On Tuesday, the North Adams Police Detective Unit investigated 115 Bradley St. in North Adams for suspected distribution of narcotics. "Observations at the address" led to a traffic stop, police say.
