After 42 years with WUSF, Russell Gant is signing off. The music director and host at Classical WSMR is retiring Wednesday. Gant started working at WUSF as a volunteer and then part-time production assistant in 1983 while he was a music student at the University of South Florida. He became a full-time on-air music host in 1987. Gant picked out around 50 of his favorite pieces of music that are airing all day Wednesday on WSMR 89.1 and 103.9 FM.

If you live in Pinellas or Sarasota counties and want to get your hands on some free sandbags at the start of hurricane season, your time to act is this soon. Pinellas County is opening a pair of temporary sites to fill your own sandbags Friday from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or until supplies last.

WUSF Public Media is now taking applications for news internships for the fall 2025 semester. The semester-long positions include individual internships focusing on radio, digital news and social media platforms. All WUSF News interns are paid. Interns must be currently enrolled in college at the time they work at WUSF News. They can also be accepted and are preparing to enter graduate school.

The University of South Florida has named a presidential search committee. The members will look for the successor to Rhea Law, who announced plans to retire earlier this week. The 15-member committee includes USF Board of Trustee members, a student and a faculty member, and business leaders from around the Tampa Bay area. It will be led by Board of Trustee vice chair Mike Griffin. He led the search committee that selected Law in 2022.

For the third time in just over a month and a half, counties around the greater Tampa Bay region are opening cold weather shelters. Temperatures in the area are expected to drop into the low to mid 40s early Friday morning, with cool conditions expected to extend into the weekend. Cold weather shelters are being opened for people without homes or those who live in homes without adequate heat. Pinellas will open shelters Thursday from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Many sites will serve meals.
