The kids had flown the nest, we could both work from home, and if we stuck to somewhere no more than a couple of hours away from London we could still see friends, get to the theatre, and I could still go to Spurs (OK, that’s not an advantage these days). We have big skies, we have nature – we have to keep deer out of the garden. People say hello. The pubs are welcoming, everyone has a dog.

Two years ago, on turning 60, I decided to revive a great Jewish tradition. I took up smoking again. I’d given up for a number of years but I missed it and as it is often felt that landmark birthdays are the time to take up a new hobby or pastime, this was the one I chose. Besides, I was old enough and stupid enough to do something I enjoyed despite the obvious and quite natural arguments against.

There are many aspects of national newspaper journalism that annoy journalists themselves, particularly those of us who have been around for some time and witnessed the changes and how it affects us. Yes, we moan about reduced payments, the lack of respect (admittedly justified in some cases), cutting back on sub-editors, celebrity-led online content and dictatorial campaigns telling people not to read the newspapers they want to read, run by those who do not read those publications anyway.

Glad to hear @KerryOBrien speak truth to power on @abcnews this morning. Chasing clicks, eyeballs and gotcha’s has dumbed down output to the almost puerile and @RadioNational seems to want to ape commercial breakfast outlets. Even young people care about accountability.
