Memphis Light, Gas & Water (MLGW), which serves over 440,000 customers, aims to build a solar generation plant and utility-scale battery storage to add stability to the city’s power grid, according to an article in The Commercial Appeal. MLGW, the nation’s largest three-service municipal utility, announced its intent to issue a request for proposal for 100 megawatts (MW) of solar power generation and 80 MW of battery storage in a press release on its website.

For the first time, wind and solar energy supplied more power than coal in the United States last year, according to an analysis from the Rhodium Group, a think tank focused on economic and policy challenges such as energy systems. The amount of power supplied by coal plants fell to the lowest level since 1967, according to the report. Coal generation is estimated to further decline this year and in the future, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).
