AbstractAs energy systems transform to rely on renewable energy and electrification to mitigate climate change, they encounter stronger year-to-year variability in energy supply and demand. Yet, most infrastructure planning relies on a single weather year, risking a potential lack of robustness. In this paper, we optimize capacity layouts for a European energy system under net-zero CO2 emissions for 62 different weather years.

Model descriptionWe use the open-source European sector coupled model PyPSA-Eur-Sec30, which minimises total system costs while optimising generation, storage and distribution capacity and dispatch. It covers energy and feedstock demand in the sectors electricity, heating, transport and industry. The model has already been presented in detail in various publications33,47,48,49, so in the following only the newly implemented features for this study are presented.
