Athletes Unlimited basketball action in Nashville

Athletes Unlimited Pro Basketball tipped off a four-week run at Municipal Auditorium on Feb. 5. The women’s basketball league includes 40 players with college, WNBA and/or international experience. Teams consist of 10 players each and are re-drafted every week by a new set of captains, who also coach their respective squad through a three-game, round-robin format. Players are awarded points if their teams wins a quarter or a game.

A day of support, unity for Nashville immigrants

Hundreds gathered at the Parthenon in Centennial Park on Monday for a rally in support of Nashville’s immigrant community, holding signs and waving the flags of various countries. The rally, organized by Hijos De Inmigrantes, followed “A Day Without Immigrants,” in which immigrants were encouraged to stay home from work and refrain from spending money to show the community’s impact on the American economy.

Last night, the Nashville Zoo began its annual Zoolumination festival. From Nov. 14 to Feb. 9, more than a thousand illuminated Chinese lantern sculptures will be on display throughout the park. The Sumatran Tiger, Andean Bear and Flamingo areas will be open to guests, with hot drinks and snacks available at pop-up bars along the way, as well as ice skating, movies and dinner options. The North Pole Village, features a traditional holiday experience with reindeer sculptures and Santa’s Workshop.

This week at the Fairgrounds Nashville Speedway,more than 400 firefighters from across the country and the globe competed in the Firefighter Challenge World Championship. The challenge simulates firefighting scenarios in a timed obstacle course. Competitors run up a five-story tower while carrying a 40–pound hose, lift another 40-pound hose at the top of the tower, run down the tower to the forcible entry test.

Nashville artist Elisheba Mrozik and Creative Girls Rock founder Charmin Bates unveiled a 1,400 square-foot mural Thursday at the Elizabeth Duff Transit Center downtown. The mural was dedicated to the woman for whom WeGo’s central hub is named, Elizabeth Duff, the first female and black bus operator in Nashville. Duff dedicated 33 years at Metropolitan Transit Authority, now WeGo Transit, and was named Urban Driver of the Year in 2004.

This week, workers endured high temperatures to assemble the carnival rides, exhibits and more for The Nashville Fair. Livestock arrived at the expo center on Thursday. Midway food and games were meticulously cleaned for the expected crowds over the event’s 10-day run. Live entertainment, including music and pro wrestling, will take place daily. The Nashville Fair opens this evening and runs through Sept. 15 at The Fairgrounds Nashville. See how it all came together in the slideshow above.
