A mom in Georgia was recently arrested and charged with reckless conduct after her ten-year-old son was found walking less than a mile from her home. I can’t stop thinking about it. Many of us grew up riding our bikes around the neighborhood and walking with friends to the lake down the bike path. Even now, with a two-year-old, I wonder how much freedom is good for him: Is it OK if he wanders around the upper area of our farm, where I can mostly see him and hear him when the window’s cracked?

Years ago, I had a roommate who worked out every day and would also consume Dionysian amounts of Entenmann’s cake. My kind of guy. We got along, in part, because of a shared conviction that the pursuit of physical fitness didn’t preclude putting away vast quantities of processed sugar. Not to brag, but in my prime I could eat an entire family size package of Chips Ahoy as a post-run snack. The glories of youth. But you get older and, you’d like to think, wiser.

In 2018, I was on one of the press vehicles for the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc, the 106-mile race around the Mont Blanc massif that is widely regarded as the most prestigious event on the ultra circuit. At around 3 a.m., on September 1, a local guide led some members of the media on a hike up the Grand Col Ferret section of the course–a vaunted mountain pass between Italy and Switzerland.

Back in 2016, I wrote a column with the rather glib headline: “Yes, Professional Runners Are Weak.” In my defense, I was merely paraphrasing the recently retired marathoner Ryan Hall. After hanging up his running shoes, the American record holder in the half marathon had hit the weight room hard and transformed himself from a scrawny endurance athlete into a muscle-bound beefcake. “I’ve been small and weak all my life,” Hall said in an interview with Runner’s World.
