Would-be killer Peter Brooks tried everything he could to avoid justice. The 61-year-old cycled from his house in Southwell to the home of his victim, fellow surgeon Graeme Perks, around two miles away in Halam, in the middle of the night with two containers of petrol, a crowbar and a knife. Dressed in camouflage clothing, the defendant broke in through a conservatory door while Mr Perks, his wife and his son were upstairs sleeping.

A car thief and ram-raider dragged a delivery driver down the street as the victim tried to stop him stealing his van. Kayne Palmer, 33, told the man to “get up off the road” and drove off. The victim, who had stopped to make a delivery, needed multiple skin grafts to repair the damage caused in the incident in Nottingham last year. Palmer was also sentenced for numerous other incidents, including car thefts in Leicester, Loughborough and Wigston.

Nottingham Crown Court heard how the victim struck his head on the floor and was rendered unconscious when he was forcibly pushed by Kyle Pridmore during the altercation between two groups of men.
