Ask me what Greta Garbo’s first film produced in the United States was, what early 1920s D.W. Griffith film experimented with sound, or what Charlie Chaplin feature from 1923 caused some controversy because his “Tramp” character doesn’t appear in it, and I can totally converse with you.

On the warm and sunny afternoon of March 2, catechumens, candidates, sponsors, and families from across the Diocese of Madison traveled to Waunakee. They filled the sanctuary of St. John the Baptist Church there, part of St. Maximilian Kolbe Pastorate, to take part in the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion liturgies led by Bishop Donald J. Hying of Madison.

Two parishes celebrated the installation of pastors the weekend of March 1 and 2. On March 1, Bishop Donald J. Hying of Madison installed Fr. Carlos Reinoso, SJS, as the pastor of Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament Parish, located on the western edge of the diocese. Father Reinoso’s installation took place at Immaculate Conception Church in Boscobel during the parish’s Sunday anticipatory Mass.

Robert “Bob” and Rita Schelble exchanged wedding vows 76 years ago, in September of 1948 in La Crosse. Now 98 and 97, respectively, they’ve lived a full life together and currently reside in Sun Prairie. Throughout their many years of marriage, the Schelbles have undoubtedly experienced the good and bad of life, but grounded in faith, Bob and Rita have taken seriously the indissolubility of the sacrament and have stood together, weathering it all.

Hello, again. We haven’t seen each other in a couple of weeks. I would have been back here sooner but no one wants me writing about the Annual Catholic Appeal. We have more appropriate professionals for that. It’s now Lent. It’s a little later this year but it always seems to come at the right time. We always know we need a Lent to fix ourselves but we can never quite stop the fixes from being needed enough during the liturgically green and other color times of the year.

Observationally speaking, January 20, 2025, was a day of mixed emotions for a lot of people. One presidential administration began its service and leadership and another one ended its. So it goes. Some people were happy. Some were not. That’s life. That’s liberty. That’s the pursuit of happiness.

The Diocese of Madison has named six sites for pilgrimage during the Jubilee Year of Hope. The sites are: Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Monona, St. Cecilia Church in Wisconsin Dells, St. Bernard Church in Watertown, Nativity of Mary Church in Janesville, St. Mary Church in Fennimore, and the Schoenstatt Shrine in Madison. The sites were chosen based on regional geography and special devotions or links to the Diocese of Madison.

There hasn’t been a slow news day so far in A.D. 2025. That’s good news for a news producer, but bad news for all of the people affected by the news. Before most people woke up on January 1, we had the deadly truck attack in New Orleans. Today, we have the wildfires destroying parts of Southern California in what some are calling “apocalyptic” — a word I never recall seeing in the news prominently before (if it was used during 9/11, I don’t remember).
