A water pipe that burst overnight and flooded Duke University Hospital continues to cause problems for staff and patients Friday morning. Hospital officials said a chilled water pipe inside a wall burst at 11:40 p.m. Thursday, flooding the Emergency Department. The hospital, on Erwin Road, is temporarily diverting ambulances to nearby hospitals, according to a statement from hospital officials at 10:20 a.m. Dec. 27.

A North Carolina woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash early Sunday morning, and the search for the driver remains ongoing. Kortney Atkins, 24, from Goldsboro, died after the 3 a.m. crash, according to the State Highway Patrol. She was a passenger in the front seat of a Jeep that was hit head-on by a wrong-way driver on U.S. 70 in Johnston County, state troopers reported. The wrong-way driver jumped out of a white BMW, which had caught fire, and left it to burn, authorities said.

A man who walked into Wake Med Hospital with a gunshot wound on Thursday has died. Raleigh police arrested the suspected killer and charged him with murder. A man has been charged with murder after a shooting victim died in a Raleigh hospital over the weekend. Christopher Fitzgerald Branch, 60, was identified by police on Dec. 14 as the person who died. The Raleigh Police Department charged Glenn Levon Strickland, a 46-year-old from Clayton, with murder.
