The High Point City Council approved a nearly $538 million budget that keeps the property tax rate flat while assuring residents they would look at staffing for the fire department. A High Point fire station was temporarily without a working engine or rescue unit last week. Residents and firefighters spoke out at the City Council meeting Monday that support is needed for the fire department.

Violent crime is on the decline so far this year in Forsyth and Guilford counties. The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office says violent crime has decreased by 19% and property crime by 9% since January 2024. As of late May, the Winston-Salem Police Department reports there have been four homicides in 2025, compared to 29 last year. Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough said at a recent press conference that the improvements are a community effort.

Daniel Duckworth is the new police chief for the town of Boone. Duckworth has served as interim chief since January and has more than a decade of experience with the Boone Police Department. He was officially named to the permanent position at Wednesday's town council meeting. Duckworth said at the meeting he was humbled to be selected for the position. "I just want to carry on the family culture that we have," he said.

Summerfield is considering raising its property tax rate for the first time in a decade in order to add services and appease state leaders. The move comes as legislation moves through the state legislature that could impact the town's status. House Bill 801 would allow the General Assembly to study what are called "paper towns" in North Carolina and determine if their charters should be revoked. The term refers to municipalities that provide little to no services to their residents.

Greensboro has launched a website that allows individuals to learn more about a housing initiative to add 10,000 new homes by 2030. The new website provides data points to track the progress of housing units being added. It comes just a few months after Greensboro City Manager Trey Davis first announced his 'Road to 10,000' plan. A recent National Association of Realtors study found Greensboro among the cities facing a shortage of affordable homes.
