Question: I’m very upset right now and I’m writing to you in the hope that you can help me make sense of what is happening. My husband is an only child and his father is deceased. His mother continued to live on her own after her husband died, but now she appears to be not so well able to cope. She is 83 and in good health generally, but it seems to me that she is not as sharp as she used to be. Things came to a head recently because she had a bad fall and was in hospital for a few days.

Question: Is it ever right to leave a functioning alcoholic? My wife secretly drinks almost every evening at home. When I ask her if she is drinking she denies it, but it is evident she is. Sometimes she can be so drunk she can’t deny it and says she’ll get help. She says she’ll see a psychologist rather than Alcoholics Anonymous. But this has been happening for years and she has gone no further. If I am not at home, she’ll drink all the more. I never know what state she will be in when I return.

Dear Mary: My husband hits and kicks my children. I’m frightened and don’t know what to do to stop him"Your husband’s treatment of his family is not going to improve unless drastic steps are taken." Image: GettyQuestion: Can you please advise me what to do about my husband? He has a very bad temper at times and kicks and hits my children if they do anything wrong. They are 11 and 12 years old. I know my children get very upset if I say anything to my husband about it because it starts a row.
