Advent is a tradition in many Christian fellowships but I did not understand anything about Advent until we moved overseas. In East Africa, the Maasai people had little understanding of Christmas until after the church was established for several years. Then the Christmas celebration, rightly so, took on the cultural makeup of their celebrations — not American style. During the year we lived in Kenya, we as a family adopted the Advent practice as a way to anticipate Christmas which is the purpose.

Today is the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls which kicks of the annual 16 days of activism against gender based violence which goes through until International Human Rights Day on 10th December. Every 10 minutes, a woman is killed by an intimate partner or family member. Violence against women and girls must end. We all have a role to play in preventing it. I uncovered several secret recipes for cooking a Thanksgiving turkey. Most often secret recipes are not shared but kept hidden. These are too good not to share. At the University Pre-K, a traditional activity involved asking the children how to cook the Thanksgiving turkey. Without reviewing lesson plans leading up to the activity, I suspect various Thanksgiving books were read to the children. This is building prior knowledge for the recipe activity.

I sat on the Federal Conference Committee (FCC) for several years – which I thoroughly enjoyed – and like most newbies I asked questions about the venues we used. Why do we seem to rotate the Autumn Conference between two towns on the south coast? What about other places further north with good Conference facilities? The reasons soon became apparent. FCC does look at as many potential Conference venues as possible, and in the end it comes down to two things – facilities and cost.
