Why is Autumn Conference always in Brighton or Bournemouth?

I sat on the Federal Conference Committee (FCC) for several years – which I thoroughly enjoyed – and like most newbies I asked questions about the venues we used. Why do we seem to rotate the Autumn Conference between two towns on the south coast? What about other places further north with good Conference facilities? The reasons soon became apparent. FCC does look at as many potential Conference venues as possible, and in the end it comes down to two things – facilities and cost.

It’s Summer 2049. Peter and his friend Mark are doing their weekly shop in Morrisons. They stop at the cigarette kiosk on the way out. Peter, born on 31 December 2008, shows his compulsory ID card to prove that he is old enough to buy tobacco products. Mark, born just a day later has never been legally allowed to buy them. Instead, he gets them from various sources, including a dodgy bloke down the pub.

I know we said we were disappearing until after the New Year, but we thought you would like to see Ed Davey’s Christmas Message.
