Data published by the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) shows 53 prisoners died up to December 18 — an increase of 13 on last year’s total of 40 jail deaths. It takes the overall number of deaths in Scotland’s overcrowded prisons to 422 since 2013. Scottish Conservative shadow justice secretary Liam Kerr MSP said the “shocking figures” exposed the SNP’s failure to “get a grip on Scotland’s ever-growing prison crisis”.

Almost 7000 assaults were carried out on Scots police officers last year – nearly 20 per day on average – with hundreds needing hospital treatment for serious injuries. Police Scotland recorded 6702 assaults on officers and staff in 2023-24, with 1675 (25 per cent) suffering injuries and 212 needing hospital treatment.

Prison chiefs have been rapped by Scotland’s spending tsar after staff racked up £7.5million in overtime payments. Auditor General Stephen Boyle described the Scottish Prison Service’s (SPS) system not fit for purpose after the ex-gratia bill spiralled by £1.2million from £6.3million the previous year, with 2263 employees submitting 21,310 individual claims and receiving an average payout of £3321.
