LuliePalooza packed a mighty punch this year thanks to Always Live, PBS radio and the Lulie Tavern. A two stage extravaganza in the shadows of the Victoria Park grandstand in the heart of inner city Collingwood, this festival was back to basics and back to fostering local talent. Despite the heatwave, the conditions were more than manageable – plenty of sunscreen, lots of free water and ample seating and shade for those punters wanting a spell.

Opening the show tonight was Melbourne singer songwriter Lotte Gallagher who at 17 was a finalist in the Triple J unearthed High for 2023. What a great opportunity for her to join St Vincent on this exclusively Victorian run of shows as part of the Always Live initiative. While still a work in progress as she carves her own musical niche, Gallagher’s voice was her weapon. Definitely an artist on the rise and one to watch.

Kim Wilde made a triumphant return to the Palais in St Kilda on Saturday night to close out the Australian leg of her greatest hits tour. Having last graced the majestic Melbourne stage in 2016 touring with Howard Jones and next door at the old Palace in 2013 with Nik Kershaw, tonight it was once again a Wilde family affair.

Saturday April 20 Caribbean Gardens ScoresbyWe all know of the controversy surrounding this event – the business side of things really lived up to its name right up to the eleventh hour IYKYK as the kids say. However – I’m not going to dwell on that or the seven stages of grief I went through in the week prior. I arrived at the Caribbean Gardens site having reached the acceptance stage and was open to whatever experience unfolded.

Despite less than ideal conditions with temperatures up towards 35 degrees Celsius, and the air dry and dusty, this was one of the most enjoyable winery shows I’ve been to in a while. The opening act Bachelor Girl more than ably welcomed the crowd with their familiar ‘90s guitar pop most notably, the radio friendly “Buses and Trains” and “Lucky Me” as they settled in and found their picnic spots amid the slivers of shade as protection from the onslaught of the midday sun.

What a great bloke Dave Grohl is! That was the overwhelming impression that the majority of the people packed into AMMI stadium were left with at the conclusion of the Foo Fighters’ second Melbourne show on their 2023 Australian tour. The Chicago area native who rose to the height of ‘90s grunge heights as the drummer of Nirvana just gets better and better as time goes on, both musically and as an example of gratitude and resilience.

Some might say that Berlin, the American new wave band formed in 1978 and Culture Club, British new wave club kids from 1981, are unusual touring partners some 40 plus years later in 2023 but I beg to differ. Musically they are poles apart but as far as being “of a time” I can remember an earlier instance of them being paired up together. As a teen in the ‘80s I was all about whatever was happening on the radio.

What a triumphant return to Melbourne for Those Pretty Wrongs who jingled our jangle on their last tour back in 2016. The duo comprising of Jody Stephens and Luther Russell, brought a rich musical history to the stage much to the delight of the intimate crowd as well as a swathe of new material all of their own, the bulk of it coming from their latest release, Holiday Camp.
