Formerly the site of the Working Mens College, now known as RMIT, Bowen Street has a rich educational history dating back to the earliest days of Melbourne.

Corrs Lane, situated between Londsdale Street and Little Bourke Street, is a little-known reminder of how the city used to look. Hosting a handful of Asian restaurants bars, and even a German Cocktail bar, Corrs Lane is an interesting place to visit. Built sometime before 1895, Corrs Lane used to be home to some of Melbourne’s best billiard table manufacturers, with Alcock’s Timer Yard and Manufactory calling the lane home.

Although most would only know Red Cape Lane as just another entrance into QV, but this Lane has a far longer history than you might think. The name Red Cape Lane originates from the Lane’s use as part of one of Melbourne’s earliest hospitals, derived from the red capes worn by its staff. Originally the Laneway was part of the Queen Victoria Hospital, built between 1840 and 1860, it was the first hospital to be led by a female doctor in Australia.

Rankins Lane, located on Little Bourke Street, is one of Melbourne’s little-known treasures. Surrounded by old brick buildings, Rankins Lane has retained much of its original charm since it’s opening in 1895. Originally famous for its jewelry industry in the early to mid-1900’s, many of the buildings around the lane have since been converted into shops and apartments.

Tattersalls lane is famous for it’s nightlife, hosting some of Melbourne’s most well-known nightclubs and bars. Sitting between Londsdale and Little Bourke Street, Tattersalls Lane hosts Bars, Nightclubs, and Asian restaurants on the Little Bourke Street end. One of the many businesses on Tattersalls Lane is the famous bar called Section 8, a bar that could only be found in Melbourne.

Royal Arcade in the heart of Melbourne is one of the city’s most well-known tourist attractions. Opened in 1870, Royal Arcade holds the record for the oldest surviving arcade in Australia. Designed by Charles Webb, the Arcade itself features an impressive glass ceiling, allowing the arcade to be lit with natural light. Famously in 1893 two states of the mythical figures “Gog and Magog” were added to the southern end of the Arcade, based on similar statues located in London’s Guildhall.

Hardware lane, situated in the heart of Melbourne, is famed for its many dining opportunities and European style. Originally called Wrights Lane, it was home to some of Melbourne’s earliest hotels, such as the Shamrock Hotel and Kirks Bazaar Hotel as early as 1866, today neither hotel remains. The laneway has changed significantly since, and was subdivided into two laneways in 1925, and renamed in 1927 to Hardware Lane.

Little Bourke Street, most famous for hosting Melbourne’s Chinatown, has a rich and vibrant history nearly as long as the city itself. One of Melbourne’s most well-known tourist attractions is Chinatown, holding the record for the oldest Chinatown in the western world, it continues to be a major hub for tourists originating from Asia. Containing a near endless display of Asian food, groceries, and Bars, Little Bourke Street lives up to its reputation as being the multicultural hub of Melbourne.
