Russia's refusal to extend the Black Sea grain deal, announced early Monday morning by the Kremlin, dominated the United Nations Security Council's session on Ukraine in the afternoon. The news from Moscow rejecting the renewal of the initiative - signed by Russia, Ukraine, Türkiye and the UN nearly one year ago - was already widely reported by the time the Council met. The deal officially ends on July 18.

The Wagner chieftain Yevgeny Prigozhin's rebellion against Vladmir Putin, over his dissatisfaction with the regular Russian army's failures in Ukraine, collapsed so quickly that the United Nations Security Council, the UN General Assembly and the UN secretary-general never even had time to issue statements on the crisis - although the latter did so on Sunday afternoon.

Yet disappointingly, she notes, a UN Women “safety net” fund for human-rights defenders was denied the judges because of a seeming technicality.

Thankfully, many women judges have escaped Afghanistan with the help of the International Association of Women Judges and other organizations and governments. Sixty-eight women judges still desperately need sanctuary. I am deeply concerned for the safety of women who, like me, worked in the justice system in Afghanistan and remain in the region. They are among the brave women who sent the Taliban, terrorists and criminals to prison.
