I have long had conflicted feelings about the legacy of Henry Kissinger, who died on Nov. 29. I had known him since my college days. He was a colleague of my father, Arthur Schlesinger Jr., on the Harvard faculty. I took Kissinger's course on international relations. To my surprise, he occasionally used to invite me to his office, after his lectures, for a half-hour of talk. I found him engaging, charming, gossipy and relatively open. He disliked academia. He found it stultifying and parochial.
