As the prep softball season concluded over the past two weekends, in addition to state trophies getting handed out to the best teams in the state, the Illinois Softball Coaches Association also handed out individual hardware for its All-State teams. And with a total of 27 selections, the Daily Journal coverage area once again produced a robust amount of statewide talent.

As the summer of 2020 saw restrictions from the COVID-19 pandemic start to slightly ease up, Jonathan Ward knew he couldn’t do much, but he wanted to give back to his hometown. The Kankakee native and 2016 Bishop McNamara graduate had just signed his first NFL contract as an undrafted free agent running back with the Arizona Cardinals a couple of months prior, and before he took a professional snap, he wanted to be a professional in his community.

Over the course of June, dozens of schools will host scores more for several different summer basketball shootouts, but only two of those events also had college basketball coaches on hand. In addition to the longstanding Windmill City Shootout hosted by Batavia, Kankakee’s Genevra Walters Community Center was the other site, where the Kays hosted their inaugural Kankakee Live.

The pinnacle of world motorsports may have come nearly a month ago over Memorial Day weekend with the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600, but for dirt track fans across America, the season just got started this week. The DIRTcar Summer Nationals, a grueling gauntlet of 31 nights of racing in 34 days, kicked off this week. After the tour kicked off in Brownstown Tuesday, Kankakee County Speedway hosted night two on Wednesday night.
