The Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security has approved the volume of future energy storage capacity which Italian grid operator Terna has suggested is necessary to keep the lights by the publication of decree no. 53, of Feb. 27. Terna calculated Italy will need 10 GWh of energy storage capacity to maintain reliable grid electricity supply in 2028.

Italy’s transmission system operator (TSO) Terna has announced the results of its capacity market auction for the delivery year 2027. It has allocated 38.04 GW of existing capacity, 0.59 GW of new capacity and 4.36 GW of capacity from abroad. The auction was held on Feb. 26. For each Italian region, Terna announced the total amounts accepted and the related enhancement prizes. Altogether, the total capacity awarded is 43 GW, for more than €1.847 billion.

Italian grid operator Terna holds its main capacity market auction for the 2027 delivery year on Wednesday. The procurement exercise aims to ensure sufficient grid capacity for that year from new generation and energy storage assets. The national electricity TSO has estimated renewable energy generation and energy storage sites will contribute around 758 MW.

Israeli technology company N2OFF says it has signed a binding letter of intent with Solterra Ltd. subsidiary Soltera Brand Services Italy to construct two 98 MW/392 MWh BESS in Sicily. Under the terms of the deal, N2OFF will eventually own around 70% of the projects after an investment of up to €2.35 million ($2.43 million).

From ESS NewsItalian grid operator Terna, in its monthly electricity demand update for November 2024, revealed the country added 1.74 GW of energy storage systems between Jan. 1 and Oct. 31, 2024. Publishing storage system data for the first time, Terna reported Italy had around 707,000 installations at the end of October, corresponding to 11,783 MWh of capacity and 5,186 MW of nominal power, of which 864 MW was in the form of utility-scale energy storage sites.
