US-based safety certification body UL has updated its test method for evaluating the risk of thermal runaway in battery energy storage systems (BESS). Updates to the fifth edition of UL’s ANSI/CAN/UL 9540A standard include clearer criteria for determining cell-to-cell propagation of thermal runaway, a chemical reaction which causes rapid temperature and pressure rises in battery cells, leading to the risk of fire and explosion.

Large-scale, long-duration energy storage (LDES) facilities such as pumped hydro sites will be critical to support the ideal amount of solar generation capacity in Spain, as calculated by Madrid-based campaign group Ecologists in Action. The environmental group has calculated the volume of clean energy generation capacity that would be required for a 100% renewables grid by 2030, using various scenarios.

California-based climate data and analytics company WattCarbon says its new Aristotle, AI-powered carbon measurement platform can record every watt-hour entering and exiting a battery, and its source. With the data translated into an emissions profile for the battery – based on the carbon intensity of grid electricity at time of dispatch – time-based accounting could enable users of the battery’s electricity to meet clean energy goals.

Hydro-Québec subsidiary Evlo Energy Storage Inc says it has commissioned the first of three planned grid-scale energy storage projects in American Samoa. The first project adds 4 MW/8 MWh, two-hour-duration energy storage to the local grid in Tutuila. The company collaborated with Eastern Power Solutions, a solar energy service provider, to develop the project, which will be co-located with 20 MW of solar capacity.
