Tapuwae Tairāwhiti Trails aims to make trails across the region more accessible with the help of a new website, while also collecting data on the use of local cycle and walk ways.

Public Interest Journalism funded through NZ On AirAn exhibition featuring the quilting of Ngāti Porou artist Maungarongo (Ron) Te Kawa has arrived at Tairāwhiti Museum, marking the final stop on a three-year global journey. Te Whare Pora: A Sacred Space explores mātauranga Māori and Te Kawa’s whakapapa through quilted works of vibrant colours and textiles manipulated in his unique way. He is excited to be home after being based in places across New Zealand and the world for the last three years.

Faces of the Coast, an art exhibition and auction of donated artworks, opens on Friday at Forty10 Cafe on Lowe St.The paintings on sale will raise money for Mahia Wave Warriors for the work they do in the community. This is the fifth year of the exhibition, which draws attention to suicide and mental health in an effort to prevent further lives being lost.

Gisborne residents who successfully petitioned for slower speeds on some local roads are pushing for those changes to remain. Councils have until July 2025 to reverse blanket speed limits that took effect on January 1, 2020, under a new rule by the Government. Gisborne District Council is still working out which roads will need higher speed limits under the Government directive. The changes also create variable speed limits around schools during pick-up and drop-off times.

Seven people from Gisborne/Tairāwhiti have been named medallists in the Kiwibank Local Hero Awards, celebrating their contributions to their communities. They are among 100 medallists across the country who will advance to the semifinals. The finalists will be announced in February, with the overall winners to follow. “They are an extraordinary group of Kiwis making a positive difference in their communities,” said an awards spokesperson. “Individually, these medallists are champions of change.
