It was a good night for the Liverpool trio currently away with England at the U21 European Championship — though how long any of the three players involved for the young Lions will remain at Anfield is unclear. Harvey Elliott scored a goal and Jarell Quansah played well — aside from giving away a penalty — with England winning 3-1 in 90 minutes to set up a semi-final clash against the Netherlands.

Liverpool has identified the former Besiktas manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst as the leading contender to take over from John Heitinga on Arne Slot's coaching staff. Van Bronckhorst, the former Arsenal and Barcelona defender, has also managed Rangers in the past and his a highly-regarded coach. Heitinga left Anfield to join Ajax earlier in the summer and the search for a replacement has been ongoing. Van Bronckhorst, 50, has also previously been in charge of Feyenoord, Slot's old club.

Talented Hungary U21 goalkeeper Armin Pecsi became the second Liverpool signing of the summer after the Netherlands wing-back Jeremie Frimpong when he signed from Puskas Akademia. Liverpool.com understands that Pecsi will initially play for the Reds' U21s side, who are now searching for a new head coach after Barry Lewtas stepped down, while benefiting from training with Alisson Becker and Giorgi Mamardashvili during the week. The fee is understood to be up to around $2.0 million (£1.5 million).

Liverpool will begin the 2025/26 season as Premier League champion, and indeed the favorite to lift the league title trophy once again in May of next year. But the Reds and the rest of the teams in the top flight will be using a different ball next season as a result of the existing contract with Nike coming to an end. Puma will be taking over from the US sports brand, and there is a leaked version doing the rounds on social media ahead of its official release on Wednesday of this week.

Liverpool has already wrapped up a deal for Jeremie Frimpong, triggering the $39 million (£30 million) release clause that was inserted into his Bayer Leverkusen contract. But Arne Slot is not done there. Negotiations are ongoing over a blockbuster move for Florian Wirtz, who will become the Reds' record transfer by some distance should that get over the line, while Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez is another on the agenda.

Pep Lijnders has worked with one manager of his generation, Jurgen Klopp, and now will work with another in Pep Guardiola. Still, it will feel odd to see him on the Man City bench, trying to catch up with #LFC.

We're delighted to confirm two key appointments to @PepTeam's first team coaching set-up. Pepijn Lijnders has been appointed as assistant coach while James French joins as set-piece coach.

🔴🗣️ "It's just a situation that me and the team have to have a conversation about, because I'm coming into an age now where I'm going to be 23 next season. "I don't really want to be wasting years on my career because it's a short career." https://t.co/a0aDcd8TLe

🔴🇭🇺 #LFC are closing in on a move for highly-rated goalkeeper Armin Pecsi, as reported elsewhere. I'd never heard of him, but I've done some research... https://t.co/c3U7zrqMv8
