    If you’ve been an endurance athlete longer than 5 minutes (or if you’ve ever used a commercial cardio machine), you’re familiar with intensity zones, which divide the spectrum of exercise intensities into separate bands (Zone 1, Zone 2, etc.) that are used to regulate exertion in workouts. Zones are so familiar to us, in fact, that we forget exercise intensity zones don’t actually exist—at least not in the sense that hearts and lungs and muscles exist.
