“Everything in Survivor is about timing.” Kyle says this at Tribal Council this week. It’s a simple statement and would seem obvious. But it’s a part of the game that so many players get wrong. Move too early, and you’re going to get cut next. Wait too long, and you’ve missed your window. But if you can be patient and find that sweet spot, you can make your mark on the game at just the right time and propel yourself to a win. And this week, I think a bunch of players missed their chance.

As disappointing as the result was this week, can we talk about the rice negotiation for second first? Survivor has to get rid of it. Or they at least need to change it. Giving up their chance at immunity is nuts. Force them to give up comfort items. Or, you know, actually let them negotiate. Probst gives them the terms, and they either accept or they don’t. That is, by definition, not a negotiation. Getting rid of it completely would be the best way to go.

This is a huge understatement, of course, but making movies is hard. They’re gigantic, coordinated efforts between the on-screen talent, creatives, producers, studios, camera operators, and on-set assistants. The list goes on and on. Just getting a movie made is a massive accomplishment. Anyone who manages to do that should be forever proud of that fact. But with some movies, that’s where the pride ends. Unfortunately, Off the Record is one of those movies.

Survivor is a game that breeds paranoia. And how you handle that paranoia has a huge impact on how far you go in the game. If you can take it and channel it, you can flip that paranoia on the other players. Use it to your advantage. But if you let it get the best of you, you can crash out. That was David’s fate in the game. All his actions screamed “paranoid,” but everything he was paranoid about was right. But the way he brought those concerns to his alliance marked the beginning of his downfall.

The next round of Survivor 50 opened tonight, with three new topics:Immunity NecklaceShould the tribes start with supplies or have to earn them (My vote: Start with supplies)Twists (My vote: Keep them rare)On the immunity necklace, I don’t really care. Let’s really change it up and take a note from Australian Survivor: All Stars, where the tribe immunity “necklace” was literally a sword. Let the tribes start with basic supplies! There’s nothing wrong with giving them a pot and a machete.
